On Tuesday and Wednesday last week all clubs in the UEFA Champions League played their second round of fixtures. Vital points were won and some incredible matches were played!
The Big Guns
In one of the matches of the week Real Madrid played Borussia Dortmund. Madrid took the lead with a low finish by (guess who) Cristiano Ronaldo after a lovely backheeled assist from Bale. Aubameyang levelled it just before half time but Varane looked to have given Los Blancos the three points when he put them ahead with twenty minutes left. However with just three minutes of normal time remaining, Dortmund’s summer signing Andre Schurrle thumped home a long-range strike to earn a point for his team.
In Group C Barcelona just managed to grab all three points in an unconvincing 2-1 win against Borussia Monchengladbach, in Group D Atletico Madrid won 1-0 over Bayern Munich and in group H Juventus smashed Dinamo Zagreb 4-0!
The English Teams
It was a fairly successful week for the English sides with three winning and one drawing. The draw was undoubtedly match of the match of the week with Man City sharing the spoils with Celtic. Dembele put Celtic in front before Fernandinho levelled. Then Sterling put the ball in his own net before making up for it with a goal in the right one, 2-2 after half an hour! Dembele scored a second to put Celtic ahead once again burn Nolito pegged the Scottish team back for a third time to make it a 3-3 draw and a point apiece. In the other games Leicester topped their group with a 1-0 win, Arsenal beat Basel 2-0 and Spurs beat CSKA Moscow 1-0.
All of the English teams are in great positions to progress to the Last 16 at the moment and I think Arsenal and Man City will go a long way in this years competition. However I don’t think Spurs will be able to beat any of the big boys and won’t make it past the last 16. Who knows maybe everyone will be shocked and Leicester will do a…Leicester!
