Euro 2016: Matchweek 1

Group A:

France v Romania – With the pressure of hosting the tournament the French looked nervous and poor in the early minutes. However, they grew into the game and Romania were lucky to go into the break level. Just after half-time Giroud nodded in the opening goal of Euro 2016 after the Romanian keeper missed a cross. The hosts were cruising but Stancu slotted home a penalty after Evra fouled. Up step Dimitri Payet. After missing out on going to Brazil for the World Cup in 2014, the West Ham man curled home an absolute screamer 3 minutes from time to seal the points for France!

Switzerland v Albania – This looked to be the most uneventful game of the tournament before the match. However, Albania played well and after Switzerland went ahead through Schar they could’ve equalised at many points during the match but for the Swiss keeper.

Group B:

Wales v Slovakia – How would you like to start your first ever international tournament? A free kick in the 10th minute of your first game? That’s exactly how Real Madrid man Gareth Bale started his tournament. An incredible swerving free kick fooled Kozacik the Slovakian keeper and found its way into the bottom corner to put the Welsh 1-0 up. Skrtel bundled down Williams in the box late on in the first half, for what surely must’ve been a penalty, but the ref didn’t give anything. 50 seconds after coming on as a sub, Duda smashed the ball past Danny Ward to equalise for the Slovaks before Welsh striker Hal Robsun-Kanu scuffed a shot into the bottom corner sending players and fans into ecstasy!

England v Russia – Normally England draw the first game of their Euro campaign 1-1. This game was no different as the Russians grabbed a point right at the death. However, normally England are shockingly bad and have no attacking intensity at all. This game was different. The England attack was fluid and quick resulting in many chances throughout the game. It was Dier though, in the 74th minute, who put the Three Lions in front with a superb free kick. All was looking good for England until 90 seconds from time. A cross was put into the box and the ball was headed over a stranded Joe Hart into the net. Disappointing result but impressive performance for England!

Group C:

Northern Ireland v Poland – This game was fairly boring and by far the worst so far. A first half with few chances was immediately put into its place but the second when Milik shot home in the 51st minute. Despite a few chances the Irish couldn’t equalise and Poland grab all 3 points.

Group D:

Turkey v Croatia – My prediction of Turkey to the semi finals looks a bit silly after their dismal first performance against a very good Croatian side. A superb Luca Modric volley gave Croatia a deserved win that could’ve been 5 or 6-0 if they had taken their chances! Maybe we have new dark horses for the tournament…
