On Saturday 6th of February at 2.25pm, France and Ireland will kick off the 2016 RBS Six Nations. The Stade De France will undoubtedly be packed to the rims expecting a fabulous French performance with lots of tries and entertainment. Just as that match ends, England and Scotland will compete for the Calcutta Cup at Murrayfield with the Scots hoping to continue their great form from the World Cup. 24 hours later Wales and Ireland will be finishing off their match at the Aviva Stadium which is arguably the biggest game of the tournament. This is being described as the most open Six Nations in years as all the teams are in a similar position.
England: Prediction 2nd
Following their dismal performance at the World Cup massive changes have occurred in the England camp. Eddie Jones has come in for the departing Stuart Lancaster and has made some big decisions since arriving. His team selection for the tournament came out last week with Chris Ashton featuring for the first time since 2014. Young players have also been brought in and I think this England team can actually win the Six Nations. However, if they lose their first match they could be looking at 3rd place or lower!
Wales: Prediction 1st
Beating the English was the highlight of their World Cup but in fact they were probably the closest (out of the Northen Hemisphere teams) bar Scotland to reaching the semi-finals, pushing South Africa all the way. There have been a few changes since then but apart from a couple of injuries it’s mostly the same team. A massive boost however is George North announcing himself as ‘over’ his concussion problems and if Wales get a decent start they are the strongest team in this competition.
Ireland: Prediction 3rd
The Irish got through their World Cup group with ease and did not expect to be thrashed by Argentina who 99 times out of 100 they would’ve beaten. The reigning champions still do have a chance of the title but in my opinion may finish as low as 4th due to the fact this competition is so open.
Italy: Prediction 6th
Out of all the teams in the competition Italy are the only nation that don’t have a decent chance of finishing first. They are by far the weakest team in the Six Nations and coming 3rd in a relatively easy group in the World Cup won’t help their confidence.
France: Prediction 5th
A poor performance at the World Cup from this team resulted in them coming second in their group and then succumbed to a heavy defeat against the eventual champions New Zealand. I predict they’ll finish 5th but Les Blues still have a great chance of winning the competition if results go in their favour.
Scotland: Prediction 4th
Robbed of a World Cup semi-final by an appalling refereeing decision, the Scots go into the Six Nations having been the closest out of all the teams to break into the last 4. Vern Cotter has done an incredible job with this team and now they go into this tournament with a huge chance of a top 2 finish.
