Mahrez scores 3 as Leicester power on

This time last year Leicester City were bottom of the premier league with 10 points and 2 wins from 15 games. Everything was looking ominous for the newly promoted foxes and many people (including me) thought they were down at Christmas. However, thanks to some incredible performances from Jamie Vardy starting at late April they were safe by the final whistle of the final game.

A year later, Leicester fans can look at the BPL table with their heads held high (rather than their heads in their hands) as it shows Vardy and co top of the pile. People have thought for a while now that the foxes are a one-man team but I’ve thought players like Mahrez and Kante were not getting the praise they deserved and I was proved right by there performance yesterday against out of form Swansea.

It started off badly for Swansea when hat trick hero Mahrez turned the ball in from a corner after 5 minutes. Then, at the halfway point in the 1st half a superb through ball by Kante found Mahrez (who was wrongly judged onside) just outside the box. Mahrez ignored the offside protests by Swansea defenders and coolly slipped past Fabianski. Early in the 2nd half Ki nearly put the Welsh side back in the game but his header cannoned off the bar. Swansea were left to rue their miss when an unselfish Vardy (who was chasing the record) slipped it through to Mahrez to finish it off and claim the match ball. Leicester are now top by 2 points and in my opinion will finish at least in the top 6 and won’t tail off at the end of the season. I know Southampton did last season but because they’re playing so well and are top of the league I think the foxes can really pull it out the bag.

In the other games this weekend Chelsea lost again (1-0 to Bournemouth), Stoke upset Man City 2-0 and Newcastle got a win they needed so much against in form Liverpool with a Skrtel own goal and late Wijnaldum finish giving the magpies a 2-0 win!

  1. I hope they do finish top six at the end of the season, they are playing well as a team, the longer they keep injury free the better their chances. A lot of credit should go to the manager who has them playing excellently.

  2. If they continue in this form Leicester are going to give the usual top teams a run for their money. This will make for an interesting end to the season.

  3. Great description on the game Alex, and loving the insightful and unbiased commentary. Maybe coverage of a Bournemouth game seeing as they’re looking the goods to defy the drop this season? Then in April the mighty fighting Hawks go for 4 in a row – Four-thorn Hawks! (patent pending)
